Californiadeepshot smashes them on debut at Valley

Tony Cruz-trained sprinter was two-for-two in Australia and showed startling speed to make all over 1,200m

The victory celebration from Karis Teetan said it all after Californiadeepshot did it at both ends to record a stunning sprint victory at his local debut at Happy Valley.

The Tony Cruz-trained three-year-old had trialed well at the track twice but barrier 12 was a cause of concern for connections.

Californiadeepshot soon put those worries to bed when he bounced out of the machine with speed and purpose, finding the rail as they turned at the Football Club before settling into a high cruising speed.

“He’d been to Happy Valley to trial so he knew what to expect, but what surprised me was how quickly he got that rail and that’s what won him the race,” Teetan told David Morgan from the Hong Kong Jockey Club,  “Once he got it he switched off underneath me until I needed him to quicken.”

“He’s been trialling good, he’s won both races overseas – I thought it might be tricky with the draw (12) but I had to be very confident, I had to make him understand everything about racing,”
